My Earth Project

Lauren Bon was my inspiration to create my earth project. I want to conserve nature  to enjoy a world where nature has not been destroyed. This experience was very exciting because Quyn and I to plant seeds together. Not only did we plant seeds, but also mix different kinds of seeds to create many different flowers in one pot.
This is me opening the dirt bag to fill the pots with dirt.
Next, I was making sure that all the dirt was mix and the pot had enough dirt.
Im putting the seed in the pot
Im putting the seeds inside the pot
Now that I have all the seeds inside the pot, I will water them.
Im watering the seed so they can start to grow
I am finishing watering all the pots and making sure they have enough water.

This is the end of our earth project.

Doing this earth project really made me appreciate and conserve nature. Going to Farmlab tought me to take care of the planet because if we do not take care of the planet, the planet will eventually extinct because we humans are destrying it with all the fires that we provoque in the mountains, the chemicals that we put in the environment that harm our seas, our nature. We spend so much on water, when we could conserve water when it rains. I know that by adding plants to this planet, I will make this planet a better place to live. I will also save a plant. After, I live my art class, I will try to do more earth projects that involve preserving nature and making it a better planet. For some reason, this last project was my favorite project because It really goes with who I am. I am a caring person and I want this world to be preserved and helped. it also showed many artists that also care about this planet.

Improv Everywhere

I think Improv Everywhere is such an amazing camera. This improv took place in New York City in the Ride on the Subway in 2009. It s very interesting to see people with no pants but the reaction of the people in the subway. People do not know that all the people with no pants are doing a prank to see the reaction of people. It is interesting to see the gender differences reactions. For example, the men are king of excited seeing the womes legs and they women seeing all these people are just in shock because they do not know the reason why they are taking their pants off. The children are also starring at these people because they do not know what is happening. Most of the people are amazed and they just stand there to see these people from head to toe like if they were insane. Its fun to discover the different reactions of people because that way we will now that we are all thinking something different when we see these men ann women with no pants.

Vivienne Westwood

Vivienne Westwood is a British fashion designer for bringing modern punk and new wave fashions. West wood fashions dresses are a little bit different than the dresses of Hussein Chalayan and Donatella Versace which I showed a while ago. To start, the color of the dress in entirely different from the colors of the dresses we go see when we go look for dresses. The color of the dress has two patterns, the first pattern is a aqua blue and the second patern is brown. The two color patterns go by squares. This pattern is not very outgoing for fromal dresses. However, this is the art of this dress, the pattern an the uniqeness. Next, the dress is very puffy. In this world, the only place we would take a puffy dress would be eighter in a weeding or a fifteen birthday party. However, the paterns of the colors and the puffyness makes this dress look so casual. It doesnt even look like is made for a big event. The top of the dress is top less, which makes it even more outgoing. However, top less dress wuld always look good on someone who has alot of personality. Maybe someone who would belong to a rock band would defenitely look gorgeous in this dress. This dress shows alot of patterns, and very uncommon colors that people would wear. But shows a creation of something not so repetetitive that we are all use to see when we go look at dresses.

Donatella Versace

Donatella Versage is an Italian fashion designer and a current Vice President of the Versage group, as well as the chief designer. These are Versage's two of the most resent dresses she has design for the spring. Lets start with the dress in the left side. The dress in the left side is a long green dress. The dress is simple with no decoration, flowers, or any kind of accesories to stand out the dress. The color green and the curves of the model stand out the dress. The dress in the top, have to strings that cross to each other and perhaps tie on back of the model's back. However, even thoe the dress in the left and in the right look almost the same, they are very different. The dress in the right is short, the color is a silky green, and covers the models chest entirely. The dress ends on top of the models legs, which is considered short. In the weist, the dress has a belt that is the same color of the dress with a small button stick to it. That might be the decoration of the dress. The dress in the right also has less wrinkles than the dress in the left side. A dress also makes a difference in the shape of the model. Since the model in the right side has a thinner waist, the dress looks more flat. The dress in the right side looks very formal like for a weeding or a prom and the dress in the left looks more casual. However, both dresses are very simple, nice, and stay in the fashion of 2011.

Hussein Chalayan

Hussein Chalayan is a British/ Turkish fashion Designer who graduated from Central Saint Martins in 1993. In 2007, Hussein Chalayan created this fascinating bubble dress. This bubble dress, has see thru bubbles that vary in size. For example, the bubbles at the top of the dress are bigger than the bubbles around the models stomach. The bubbles are also attached to to these silver string that make the dress. The silver strings are worn by the model vertically and horizontal. The silver strings, also seem to be covering the models breast and the bubbles. There are many bubbles in the dress, the bubbles are made out of plastic and they can also be made out of ballons. The silver strings also seem to be matching the models skin tone. The see thru bubbles seem to show most of the skin of the person who is wearing the dress. The dress looks more like a costume because is something that stands out and something outgoing to wear to a fun place. It is a very creative dress, because we do not see people wearing this dresses everday in our society. Therefore, Chalayan did a remarkable job creating this dress.

Robert Smithson

Robert Smithson was famous for his land art. Most of his work is on land and its all spiral. This is a spiral Jetty that was created in Salt Lake, Utah in 1970. It seems like Smithson created this spiral jetty out of salt rocks, mud, basalt rocks, and water. The spiral jetty is about 1,500 long and 15 foot wide. The spiral jetty seems to go counterclockwise and it seems to be very visible in the shore of the salt lake. The level of the water seems to be low because you could see the spiral in the lake. However, according to some research that I did the water level seem to be risen. Therefore, within the next years this spiral jetty might not be able to be seen anymore. The spiral jetty also looks like a track where people can walk on it. It also looks like a place where someone can take a walk in the afternoon an experience the view of the Great Salt Lake. Smithson used about 6,550 tons of rocks, this piece of art cost around 9,000 dollars. Also, this piece of construction took around six days. This is a very interesting piece of art because its composed of rocks and mud and all the things that nature provides for us without using any kind of chemicals. The water around the spiral jetty are red and this is due because of the chemicals the water has.

James Turell

James Turell is an American artist who is concerned with light ans space. Turell is also famous for creating light tunnels, and projections that create that have mass weight and their only created with light. One of Turell creations that really capture my attention are Turell skyscapes. To create this skyscape, Turell had to cut the roof of a museum in the shape of a circle so the view of the sky could be seen through the cut circle. After the circle is cut the light from the sky reflect back through the circle inside the museums wall and floors which makes part of Turell work. If you look up through the cut circle you could see the view of the sky, clouds whether its a rainy day or sunny day.
Through the circle you could experience many other things other than the view of the sky. For example, you can see the things flying in the sky, and the different shapes the clouds have. Also, you can see when the sky is turning into a darker color or a lighter color. In many cases, the sun can also be seen through the circle. It all depends the season and the time of the day in which the sky is been seen through the circle. The light of the sky is reflected through the museum walls which makes the light be original. In this picture, we can see how the light of the light is reflected inside and in the shape of a circle.

Lauren Bon ( Research Artist) and My Experience to Farmlab

Lauren Bon was born in Los Angeles, California in 1963. Lauren has a bachelors and a masters degree in architecture. In 2005, Lauren Bon created her most important project called "Not a Cornfield". The project " Not a Cornfield" is a 32 acre of land between Chinatown and Lincoln Heights.  Lauren Bon has also created Farmlab. Farmlab is committed to the preservation of living things. Farmlab was born out of Not a Cornfield and the South Central Farm. Last Friday, I got the opportunity to go to Farmlab to experience and see everything myself.
The South Central Farm was there between 1992 and 2006. It was a 13 acre community garden. It was an urban farm and community garden. The south central farm was considered the largest urban farms in the  United States. However, the South Central Farm started facing money problems, so Lauren Bon worked behind the scenes to come up with a sustainable solution to the immediate South Central crisis.

In 2006, the Annenberg Foundation decided to move the remaining trees off the South Central Farm to Farmlab in order to save the trees as the developer clears the land upon the Farm operated. Farmlab has helped keep living plants, and everything is due to Lauren Bon. Lauren Bon goal is to keep nature alive and not let the earth destroy all the living trees, plants, flowers, and seeds.

Lauren Bon has created at Farmlab four Junker Gardens. These transformed vehicles combined automobiles with agriculture in order to produce contemporary sculptures. In these vehicles, they grow vegetables, herbs and flowers in the engine cavities, cabs, flatbeds, and trunks of scrapped rides. Fountains and fish sometimes appear. This Mercedes Benz car was exhibited at Santa Monica Museum of Art in 2008. Farmlab has also created more cars as if you went to farmlab, you can see the newest car by the entrance. When I went to Farmlab there was only one car by the entrance as you can see in the picture on the bottom. I think this is a very creative way of preserving live. However, I couldnt take pictures of me with the car because I went by myself and no one was there to take me a picture.

Farmlab is located in a warehouse acroos the street from the former Not A Cornfield project site on the grounds of the Los Angeles State Historic park known as the Cornfield, and next to Los Angeles River. High above farmlab Baker street entrance, a neon sign quoting renowned sociologist Manuel Castells reads, " Another city is Possible". This is a picture of me on back of this quote.

The northern side of the state park is called Conherenge. This anabolic sculpture was created in 2006 by Bon and was made from a combination of Not A Cornfield bales, native seeds, water, natural process and some human tending. Has you can see, these are the most recent pictures of the Northern side of the park. This was the most fascinating view at farmlab because for me it had two views. One view was Los Angeles City, but the other view was the view of the plants and flowers.

One of Farmlab projects involves collecting run off water from industrial warehouse roofs, cleaning it, and then using the water various urban interventions. The picture on the top shows a bag full of water being conserved from the rain.  One of the ladies incharge of farm land explained to me that they have this big containers where the water fall down too, they cleaned it and then they use it wisely to fresh the plants and trees from farmland.

Lauren Bon also uses solar energy to give sun energy to the plants. As you can see in the picture in the top, Bon has this blue solar energy that reflects sun energy back to the plants.

                                         Strawberry Flag Project
Lauren Bon and Jonathan Sherin have created a project at the Greater Los Angeles Veterans Administration Health Care Center. The purpose of this project is to fundraise, the project has created a raised strawberry field in the shape of the American Flag. Veterans tend the strawberries, transplanted from abandomed fields, and sell preserves they make from second harvest fruit. The purpose of this project is to promote recovery and reintegration for the veterans. It also is helping revitalize a campus that housed recovering Civil War soldiers and now serves the more than 500,000 veterans in the Los Angeles area.
The flag is about the size of a football field, holds red-berried plants growing in rows of raised white pipes in a ground coconut mixture. Reclaimed trees and other plants outline the flag's blue upper left corner, creating an open-air teahouse, where visitors can sit and drink tea, relax or meditate. Bon says that this sculpture is to promote resources that support patriotism. This project was created in June 26, 2010.

(This is a video that talks about the The Strawberry Flag Project.)

This are Lauren Bon two most important projects she has created all her life. Lauren Bon Bon created Farmlab to preserve all living things and keeping them from dissapearing from the planet. Lauren Bon is inspiring because it not only inspires us to care for nature but to take actions to preserve plants. Going to farmlab was a great experience because I realize that there is people that care about the preservation of living nature.

Isamu Noguchi

Isamu Nogushi is famous for garden design and sculpture. He is also one of the most famous designer of Bauhaus and Modern Classic Design Furniture. When Nogushi was in Japan for six months, he use to work with clay and study gardens. In Japan, Nogushi realized land could be scultured and the public could see it. One of Nogushi famous furniture is the coffee table. This is a coffee table where any person can have a cup of coffee together.

To create this coffee table, Nogushi used two identical wooden elements, one that is reversed and theother one is pointing down. The color of the table is a natural brown, and it used wood from the trees planted from the earth to create this coffee table. In the top, it has a glass tabletop resting, where people can put their coffee. This coffee table is an average size, it can be for two people at the most. Nogushi describes this furniture table as one of his best furniture design. He also says his furniture ranging around few hundred dollars. Not only public can see Nogushi furniture, but they can also sit, and touch his furniture.

Maya Lin

Maya Lin is famous for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C. Lin was 21 years old when she attended Yale University in 1982 and created the Veterans Memorials Wall. Lin was studying to become an architect and as a project she decided to design the Veteran Memorial Wall. This is one of Lin's most memorable earth works involving architecture and many different designs to construct this wall.

The Veterans Memorial Wall is a V-shape wall made out of black stones. The Veterans Memorial Wall is in the shape of an open book ready to read the names of the 58,000 dead soldiers. The names of all the dead soldiers are inscribed in polish black granite. The wall itself was made from black granite from Bangalore, India. The walls also reflect the images of the trees, people visiting the walls and more.  In order to read the names of all the soldiers that died in the Vietnam war, people have to stand below the horizon which is around six feet under. The wall is 246 feet and nine inches long. The walls are sunk into the ground with the earth behind them. The color of the trees are green mix with some yellow. The walls look like they are surrounded around a circle of trees.

The other picture of the Veterans Memorial Wall taken from the satellite. The Veterans Memorial Walls are surrounded by the landscape of the earth. There is a total of 58, 267 written names in the wall. The names of all these soldiers are alphabetically in order, the size of the letters of the soldiers names are .53 inches and .015 inches in depth. All the names of the soldiers were written by a computerized typesetting process. This is a earth project that captured my attention by Lin because it combines nature with memory together into a piece of art.

Quyn and Dee Video

On Wednesday April 6, 2011 me and my new best friend Quin went to Huntington Beach to do some exploration. We explored the color of the water, the sand, the things around the beach. The color of the sky, the movement of the birds and the colors. It was exciting to record this video because this was my first time recording the beach. I was so into it that I lost my keys. The most important part I got from this video was, I was able to explore the planet in which I live on and I was able to take a deep look at the colors. I felt to relaxed, and not in a rush. I was able to see all the different things that exist around the planet and the real colors inside. For example, we all think the sand is brown, but in reality the sand has many mix colors in it. I saw black, brown, gold, white, and all these different colors. The water of the ocean is not blue, I saw brown, green, white, gold. This water is so polluted, it makes me sad to see how were destroying this planet with our own chemicals. The sand also had oil in it. We should go to the beach and take a look on how were destroying this planet. That is why it is good to take an exploration around the earth, that way we wont ignore what we want to ignore. I learned a lot on Wednesday and I hope some of you go to the beach and explore the deepness of everything.

New Artist to Research ( Scott Blake)

Hello everyone my name is Dellanira Castaneda and I would like to talk about an artist that really interest me and I definitely understand its work alo't better. As you all know, I wasn't very interested in Toni Dove, I just thought her work was a little bit to confusing and I didn't really admire her. So, Glenn has giving me a second chance to present someone of my interest and that is Scott Blake.

Scott Blake is famous for creating a series of artwork that involve the use of bar codes to create artwork. His work as been shown in many galleries around the world. His work as also appeared in magazines such as The New York Times, FHM, and Adbusters. Blake uses everyday images to create his art. Blake uses bar codes as tools to create images. Blake has made more than thirty digital portraits using bar codes. Blake has created the images of Elvis using the bar codes from Elvis music CD's. He has used Bruce Lee and Marilyn Monroe bar codes from their movie DVDs to create their portraits.

As you can see, this is one of Scott Blake's portrait using bar codes from Elvis CDS. It is very interesting to see all the bar codes Blake used to create this portrait. I tried doing some research on how many bar codes he has used a total of 940 bar codes to create this portrait.
This is Marilyn Monroe portraits using bar codes. This portrait was created in  August 22, 2003. It uses a total of 1,944 bar codes to create this image. You can click on the bar-codes and can see and hear Marilyn Monroe video and CDDs clips.
This is Bruce lee portrait involving the use of bar codes from Lee's DVDs to create his portrait. You can also scan Lee's ba rcodes to see some clips form their videos. This is an 8 feet portrait of the Chinese artist. The mosaic titles are arranged in a zig-zag pattern to break focus like a shock wave from a punch. This portrait was created in May 23, 2007. It uses around 2,560 bar codes to create this portrait.
This is Madonna portrait. For this portrait Scott Blake used the cover images instead of the bar codes from her music CD's.  This image was created in  December 3, 2001. Blake used about 10,000 CD covers to create this portrait.

This portrait was created in September 27, 1999 using a total of 7,776 bar codes. This portrait was composed from all the books Oprah published. Oprah Winfrey is an American television host, and has a talk show. She is one of the richest African American from the 20th century.

Scott Blake created this portrait of Jesus using his first refined bar code program. The titles look like real bar codes, but the half tone goes beyond regular density patterns. He also created a scannable bar code signature in the left side in the corner, using the UPC lines from a Pepsi two liter. This portrait was created in  April 9, 1999 and he has used a total of 940 bar codes to create this portrait.

Unfortunately, Blake does not make enough money to pay his bills. He also has a part time making shirts and other accessories with the images of bar codes. This is a way he could make so extra money to pay his bills. His art work can cost from one dollar to one hundred dollars. Lately in the 2011 Blake has created symbols that also scanned.
Blake as also created landscapes using real bar codes cut from packaging to depict flowers.

If you people are interested in knowing more about Scott Blake work, you can visit his page at
http://www.barcodeart.com/artwork/netart/index.html.

I would like to show my audience some video that shows how bar codes can be readable just by using your i phone.
http://www.barcodeart.com/artwork/videos/index.html

It's very interesting to see how you can use bar codes to create images. Scott Blake work should be recognized everywhere because bar codes are part of our daily life. These portraits were the most important portraits I found because they were one time important in the past and they are also important in the present. I believe that Blake creations are considered art because their a creation using something so simple. I want you people to look at his portraits and see the patterns of the bar codes.
                                              Thank You

Nam June Paik

Nam June Paik is famous for scattering televisions everywhere and using magnets to alter or distort their images. In the picture above it shows many televisions and magnets around the television creating the map of the United States. The televisions are turned on and the magnets show different colors. The shapes of the states are so well recognized. The television channels are all paired up. The seem paired up according to the state their at. It shows that Paik really loves to outstand with his creations. He likes using different magnets and uses them to create different shapes.
To create this kind of art you really need to have an imagination. The use of televisions to create art is not very common and is not very recognized. That is what makes Paik creations so original. If you see this image from far away you just see the United States map but when you look closer you could see everythin else behind.

Scott Blake

This image shows  Scott Blake turning barcodes into art forms, using it to create images of Jesus. I did some research on Scott Blake and he uses barcodes and turns them into different kinds of images. This images of Jesus looks so simple an original. It also looks like the image of Jesus we christians see in other images. Using barcodes to create images is just something so unique. Scott Blake art work shows some inspiration because it makes me feel like we could use anything to create beautiful images as the image of Jesus. The eyes of Jesus look so real that this picture would not make any difference as the other images.

It took him thousands of barcodes to create this images. There is no way you can count the barcodes in this image. It makes me want to turn to barcodes and see the creations behind them. The barcodes seem like a black and a white color. However, it takes an open mind to see the real meaning of barcodes.

Bryn Ho

Bryn picture shows sadness and depression. Bryn is closing her eyes and  looks likes she is trying to forget everything that exists in the world. The color of the image is black with grey. These colors in many cases represent death or loneliness. Bryn looks in the middle of a fog where nothing is seen exept for her. Bryn has wings that may represent freedom in some way. Her dress is black and there seems to be a moon glowing Bryn.
This picture makes me feel sad and depressed. The colors make me feel lonely. Bryn has wings but she looks like she is not ready to fly. I took a look at other other images of Bryn Ho and all her pictures consist of a dark color. It makes me feel like Bryn feels depressed at times that may be a reason why she uses dark colors in her images.

Vaneeesa Blaylock

In Vaneeesa Blaylock second life avatar picture it shows different skin color women facing to the front as if they were posing for some picture. All these second life avatar women seem to be nude in public. Their bodies are thin, their all wearing the same style and color of shoes. There are 25 silent women they all look alike. These second life avatar women are demostrating that their are unique and they all have something in common. I did some research on Blaylock and many of her work have beautiful second life avatar women.

In the beggining to me all the women looked the same but everytime I would stare again at the picture I started defining the symmetry of every womens body. These 25 avatar women reflect on our fantasies and on us. These 25 women are all beautiful and none of them are left behind or is being discriminated because of the different color her skin is. It shows 25 women from different cultures, these 25 avatar women are so sexy that everyone wants to look at them. Their so perfect, her bodies are perfect, her fashion and the way their possing for the camara. These women make beautiful patterns together they look so united which shows a message that women from all color and races ahould be united.

Joseph Delappe

Delappe is an associate professor of the department of art at the University of Nevada. he is famous for protesting on Iraq War. He as a web site called Iraqmemorial.org. Joseph Delappe's dead in Iraq is an online performance, memorial and protest. This video game shows how many soldiers from the army have died in Iraq. This video game, shows a soldier from the army laying down in the floor dead without anyone helping him. This video game is not intended to show the pleasure to show soldiers dead for fun but to show the seriousness of the war in Iraq. This video game brings messages to many Americans in the U.S.
Being in Iraq is not a fun place to be at, the war kills many soldiers each year leaving many people sad and lonely. This video shows how joining the army is not a good place to join because it leads many soldiers to death. it leaves soldiers laying down in the floor without anyone helping them.

UCI/Beall Center for Art+Technology

On Friday March 25, 2011 I got the opportunity to visit the UCI/ Beall Center for Art+Technology. In the gallery I got the opportunity to see Chico MacMurtrie Amorphic Robot Works. In the gallery they had three different kinds of inflatable bodies. These three inflatable bodies are called the Birds, Inner space , and Bic Morphic. The student who was in charge of the gallery explained to me that these inflatable bodies have life and death. If you get close to them they start inflating and creating sounds but if you move away from them they will die. She explained to me that these Inflatable robots are multi- faceted machine-sculptures that interact in their uniquely designed environments. The work involves a kinesthetic inquiry into the human condition, which has resulted in the creation of more than 250 mechanical sculptures that assume anthropomorphic and abstract forms. The first inflatable work involved birds.

These inflatable robots have the looks of a bird. When I got near them they automatically started inflating by themselves. It was very exciting to see all the birds inflating like if they were just born. They also were making some sounds. The greatest part was that nothing was cover. Everything was shown on how they created the birds. There were many invisible cables connected to the birds. The birds seem to be flying. In the beginning I didn't really get the point of the birds but then the student told me that you had to use your imagination in order to see the life of the birds. After I moved away from the birds, they automatically started dying . I also saw two other inflatables robots. The first one seemed like a spider web. I was able to go inside the inflatable robot, the student told me that I could get trap in the spider web so I needed to be careful.

I also got the chance to see the inner space inflatable body. In the beggining I was confused because I tought that it was a spider web or something else. The student there explained to me that it was a Inner Space body and if you would get near it it would start inflating by itself and also start creating sounds. She also said that you had to put your time to see the picture of the body. I was very excited to see this inflation body work, I was also able to go inside the inflatable body and be able to experience it myself.

This inflatable body is called Biomorphic, It looks like the body of a human. When I first saw this piece of art i didn't know what it was. Again, i use my imagination and it look like the movement of a human and the death of a human. It was very interesting to see this inflatable body because its different from the others is also more simple and turns into different forms. The student at UC Irvine explained to me that art is all about using your imagination and that you always have to see things in order to have an experience.  To be able to see all this inflatable bodies you have to use your imagination. The birds reminded me of when i used to draw those kinds of birds because that was the only kind of birds i was able to draw. It was a very small gallery but i think the smaller a gallery is the more time you will have to look at an art creation. The student there also showed me books about the other inflatable bodies Chico has created. Their all around the world. Perhaps someday ill have a chance to go see all of these inflatable bodies and just get insipred by them. I believe that everyone can create something if we just take the time to think about what we want to create. It was an awesome experience and i hope all of you get the chance to go and look at these inflatable bodies. I had alot of fun and I am going again with my family.
